Honor in Public Service
These were once core perspectives of our country. Our founding fathers weren't career politicians - they were farmers, inventors and philosophers. They believed service to their country was a service, and after it was complete they returned to their farms and opened their seat up for somebody new.
When the 22nd Amendment was ratified in 1951, the nation supported Presidential term limits for wise and self-evident reasons. This Amendment didn't include term limits on Congress, however, because at the time we didn't have the hyper partisanship and special interest money behind elections, nor did we have sitting members of Congress who kept their seats for decades. While some of these people may well have been honorable servants of the national interest, our circumstances today do not reflect that intention. They reflect, rather, an open bazaar of special interest peddling where our government is sold to the highest bidder.
The interests buying our government are doing so to ensure that our government cannot concentrate on our interests. And that is something the Alliance Party fundamentally seeks to change.
We intend to accomplish this goal through several measures within our platform. The most important among them are enacting term limits for members of Congress and getting private money out of politics, which we plan to extend further through measures of open and expanded voting.
