It is a revolutionary shift in perspective towards how we generate energy and acquire resources as a society. Its purpose is to solve resource scarcity, which today alongside climate change stands as one of the greatest threats to humanity's long-term existence. Although the world's governments rightfully grow concerned with climate change, our collapsing global ecosystem and a staggering loss of biodiversity, these problems obscure an even graver problem: we are running out of natural resources as our population rapidly expands.

It took humanity 200,000 years to reach 1.5 billion people in 1910. By 2015 we had reached 7.4 billion - twice the population of 1975. That's a 400% jump in the last 1/2000th of our history, and we're on track to hit 9 billion by 2040.

Alongside a rapidly developing global economy, this population explosion has led to accelerating resource extraction. As a result, human civilization risks running out of water, cheap oil and as a result of both, food.

This places our world in a precarious position. The Middle East, North Africa, India and China are some of the driest areas on the planet. Combined, these regions have a population of roughly 3 billion people. As you read this, India’s and China’s water supplies are polluted upwards of 80%. There are already 65 million displaced people fleeing conflict and unlivable conditions worldwide - a number that increases 12 million annually. So it's worth asking ourselves: what happens to global security when 100 million people run out of water? 500 million? Higher than that?

The future state of oil is equally troubling. While we've found plenty of shale and tar sand oil reserves to power our nation for the immediate future, oil companies fail to mention how expensive that oil is to extract - between five to seven times higher than crude oil sourced from Middle Eastern sand. As global oil demand increases alongside depleting conventional oil reserves, and we have a recipe for a steep spike in future prices.

Alongside growing global water scarcity, the most serious impact of the future costs of oil is its impact on food prices. Growing food relies heavily on both oil and water, so if these resources become significantly more expensive, the same goes for the price of food.

The possibility of water, oil and food becoming more scarce and thus expensive at the same time stands to severely impact the global economy and cause massive social unrest. It also presents the possibility for conflict on a global scale. Behind nearly every war that's ever been waged, the underlying cause was resource scarcity and the economic damage caused as a result, a trend that's unlikely to change as we approach a resource crisis unprecedented in human history.

On a planet that's home to more than 15,000 nuclear weapons in the hands of nine countries, that's a terrifying prospect that requires a real solution. And Universal Energy is designed to be that.

The Universal Energy framework looks to the very best technologies we have to generate energy and proposes they be designed in a way that’s both standardized and modular. This means they can be built on assembly lines with interchangeable parts. It also means they can be designed to work together by using the waste energy from one technology to power the functions of another. This allows us to generate a large amount of energy at a low enough cost to synthetically produce resources instead of extracting them from our natural environment.

Universal Energy works first by deploying a unique combination of solar power alongside advanced, ultra-clean nuclear reactors that use the element thorium, as opposed to uranium, to generate a massive amount of energy.

This energy is used to collect seawater from the coasts that is desalinated into fresh water, a portion of which is used to extract hydrogen fuel.

The fresh water, which comes out hot, is then pumped alongside highways in above-ground pipelines that are installed with interior turbines and solar panels. This allows us to generate electricity from delivering fresh water in three ways: solar power, heat energy and the flow of fresh water. Most importantly, by keeping this water hot it allows us to store energy generated by solar and wind power during the day - effectively turning a nationwide fresh water supply into the world's largest battery.

With an abundant supply of electricity, hydrogen fuel and fresh water, we can then grow an unlimited amount of food in indoor farms near cities - zeroing out the distance needed to cultivate and deliver food to population centers.

Once in place, this combined system allows us to grow specialized plants to make biofuels under ideal conditions all year round, which provides an unlimited supply of the building blocks needed to make specialized plastics and next-generation synthetic materials.

As a framework, Universal Energy gives us everything we need to sustainably live without over-extracting our natural environment - not as a function of idealism or economics, but rather as a function of technology, and with it, the platform on which we can build our world better, stronger and brighter.

Taking this approach has been made possible only recently through advances in construction, computing and material science that have greatly extended our ability to build complex systems at high precision.

To put things in perspective, most nuclear power plants in the United States were built before 1978. That means most of them were designed and built without the aid of a calculator. Just as importantly, we don't currently look to the best energy sources (renewable or otherwise) to fuel our power plants, instead settling for a hodgepodge of sources of varied effectiveness.

Our power plants today are built as unique entities, designed differently from the ground up every time. They don't talk to each other, they don't work together and each uses different types of fuel. This makes power plants highly expensive to build and operate. It also prevents us from being able to rapidly increase our power-generating capability. As a result, this limits the availability of energy to society and raises its price.

Universal Energy gives us a better approach because it specifically designs our power generating systems to be mass-produced on assembly lines - just like we do today with aircraft and automobiles. The Boeing Aircraft Corporation can today assemble ten complete 787 Dreamliner aircraft per month, translating to one every three days. We believe American manufacturing is up to the challenge of doing the same with the next-generation of advanced energy technology.

As the technologies behind Universal Energy are long-term sustainable for thousands of years, taking this approach permits us to in turn synthesize resources for thousands of years, ultimately making resource scarcity irrelevant along with the conflicts that come with it. We would no longer need to extract massive natural resources while destroying our environment. We would no longer need to rely on foreign dictators to obtain energy. Equally as important, we would no longer be limited by energy costs in whatever we set our minds to - allowing us to advance our society and economy to uncharted territory.
